Key facts

In November 2019, we unveiled the results of our Québec-wide study on student psychological health, entitled "Behind the mask". This study is intended to be an unequalled portrait of the situation on the mental health of university students.

Indeed, 23,881 members of the university student community across Quebec completed the questionnaire compiled by Léger, a participation rate of 16.1% of the entire university student population.
  • 58% of the university student population is in the worst quintile of the general population in terms of psychological distress scores.
  • 1 in 5 university students show depressive symptoms at a level where they should receive care.
  • 3 times more students have suicidal ideation than the general population and 2 times more have attempted suicide.
  • Certain groups were identified as being at greater risk of experiencing psychological health problems: gender diverse students, students with disabilities, sexually diverse students, and first generation students.
